Description

Total length 12cm, weight about 14g. Nose fairly long, tapering to a pointed tip. Dark greyish-brown grizzled with fawn or yellow, underparts and feet lighter and the tail has a dark brown line on top. Nocturnal and like many shrews is active in spells interspersed with periods of rest. It burrows under rocks or uses rodent burrows, lining its nest with soft debris. Prefers a moist, densely vegetated habitat. Common in fynbos. Feeds on a wide range of insects, earthworms and spiders. [Illustration shows the young 'caravanning' behind the mother]
