Flowering time

December to January

A small tree or shrub with whorled, leathery leaves. The flowers are in dense spike-like racemes. The large fruits are distinctive in that they are covered with a felt of dense brown hairs. The early colonists planted them elsewhere and Van Riebeeck's Hedge on Wynberg Hill is composed of this species. The hedge is a national monument. From Latin: stella, a star; -atus, a likeness to; folium, a leaf; meaning with stellate leaves
