 Ceryle rudis

Description

The black-and-white (pied) coloration is distinctive. The difference between male and female is a double breast-band in the male and a single in the female. They are usually in pairs, hunting from a perch or by hovering over water with body almost vertical and bill pointed downwards, diving into the water to seize the prey. There are normally several pairs at the bird hide at Kleinrivier Lagoon. Common resident.
