Description

The largest South African kingfisher. The male has a chestnut coloured breast and the female's belly is the same colour. The female's breast and the male's belly is spotted black on white. Normally solitary, seldom in pairs. It perches motionless on a rock, branch over water, hovering briefly before diving to seize prey. Common resident.
