The female and the non-breeding male are boldly streaked buff and dark brown above with a whitish eyebrow. It is white below, washed buff and streaked brown on breast and flanks; wings and tail dark brown. The breeding male is orange-scarlet with a black facemask which extends onto the crown, a black belly, and brown wings and tail. Found in flocks in reeds, grassland, cultivate fields, vleis. Common resident.
