Description

Plants 20-80cm high. Outer bulb tunics soft, whitish. Leaves, 5-7, linear to lanceolate, sometimes dry at flowering, 15-30cm long. Flowers white, usually with dark centre, arising from broad papery bracts. From Greek: ornithos, bird; gala, milk = high fat, milk-like secretions produced in pigeons' crops for feeding young. "Bird's milk" was colloquial in Ancient Greek for something beautiful.
