Flower from early spring, although they may be found in flower almost throughout the year

Description

Low growing shrublet, often abundant on low hillsides near the sea. Compact heads of up to 20 flowers are borne on hairy stalks, pink to purplish in colour with beetroot purple stripes on the two upper, slightly larger petals. Seven fertile stamens are present. Leaves are 3-6 lobed and velvety soft in texture. Stems and leaves are sweetly scented when bruised, The pelargonium is cultivated for oil of geranium, used in the perfume industry. capitatum = 'capitate', referring to the knob-like head of flowers
